Set To Thrive’s WHY
Our "why" is the driving force behind our support of our most vulnerable children. These children face challenges beyond their control: poverty, trauma, instability, and—all too often—a lack of support systems. A well-defined "why" motivates us even when the work is difficult. It roots our efforts in giving these children the encouragement they need to thrive. It also inspires others—educators, caregivers, and community members—to join in and take action.
Why is Set To Thrive important to our vulnerable children?
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a psychological theory that categorizes human needs into a five-tier pyramid. At the base are a person’s physiological needs, including essentials like food, water, clothes, and shelter. Moving up, individuals seek safety and security, followed by the third tier: the need for social belonging and relationships. The fourth tier encompasses self-esteem, confidence, and the respect of others. At the pinnacle is self-actualization, representing the desire for personal growth, fulfillment, and the realization of one’s potential.
According to Maslow (1943, 1954), individuals progress through these stages sequentially, with the satisfaction of lower-level needs laying the foundation for the pursuit of higher-level ones. The Hierarchy of Needs emphasizes the importance of addressing fundamental needs before focusing on higher aspirations and personal development. (Mcleod, 2023) That’s where we come in: Set To Thrive’s mission is to provide a custom bag filled with new essential items (clothing, shoes, hygiene products, and more) to children experiencing foster care and homelessness. When Set To Thrive’s social service partners come to us regarding the needs of a child, that child is in the midst of an extremely stressful and often traumatic experience and is at severe risk of not having their basic physiological needs met. While our social service partners take on the vital role of getting that child in a home where they can find shelter, food, and sleep, Set To Thrive provides that child with other necessary items for everyday life (clothes, shoes, hygiene items, etc.).
It is common for Set To Thrive to hear from our social service partners that a child has virtually no clothing, many just with the clothes on their back. This feeling leaves a child feeling incredibly vulnerable. It is vital to have resources like Set To Thrive available to the children in our community. We are proud to be able to partner with other organizations in our community that work to meet all the needs of our youth and get them to a place where they can be comfortable, confident, and thrive.
THAT IS SET TO THRIVE'S WHY!
Set To Thrive envisions a community where all children have the essential items to thrive in their community, school, and life.
We thank you for your ongoing support of Set To Thrive and hope you will continue on this journey with us to make an impact for our most vulnerable children. Let’s continue to uplift our most vulnerable children together!
Thank you!
